Welcoming The Stranger

August 22, 20261 min read

“Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for by doing that some have entertained angels without knowing it.” - Hebrews 13:2

Hospitality in biblical times was more than social courtesy; it was a sacred duty that could mean the difference between life and death for travelers. Today, creating welcoming spaces for newcomers and outsiders remains an essential expression of Christian love and a practical way to build stronger communities.

True hospitality goes beyond hosting dinner parties for friends. It involves intentionally creating environments where people who are different from us feel valued, respected, and included. This might mean learning to pronounce someone’s name correctly, asking about their cultural traditions, or simply making space for their perspectives in conversations.

Wisdom recognizes that diversity enriches our communities when we approach differences with curiosity rather than fear. Every person brings unique gifts, perspectives, and experiences that can benefit the whole group. When we create inclusive spaces, we often discover that our own understanding and faith are deepened through encounter with others.

This principle applies to various forms of difference, including race, culture, economic status, age, ability, and life experience. Creating inclusive spaces requires examining our own assumptions and biases, adapting our practices to accommodate different needs, and actively working to ensure that everyone feels welcome and valued.

Prayer:

Lord, help us create spaces where all people feel welcomed and valued. Give us hearts that see strangers as potential friends and wisdom to build communities that reflect Your love for all people. Amen.
