The Body's Economics

Paul’s metaphor of the church as a body reveals important truths about economic relationships. When some parts of the body lack what they need, the whole body suffers. When economic systems fail some community members, everyone is diminished.

High medical costs don’t just hurt those who get sick; they create anxiety for everyone who fears bankruptcy from illness. Student debt doesn’t just burden graduates; it reduces economic activity that benefits entire communities. Housing unaffordability doesn’t just affect renters; it undermines the stability that healthy communities require.

Understanding these connections helps us see that economic justice benefits everyone, not just those who are currently struggling. When we support policies like universal healthcare or debt forgiveness, we’re not just helping others; we’re strengthening the entire community body.

God designed us for interdependence, where the flourishing of each person contributes to the wellbeing of all.
