Speaking For The Voiceless

August 26, 20261 min read

“Speak out for those who cannot speak, for the rights of all the destitute. Speak out, judge righteously, defend the rights of the poor and needy.” - Proverbs 31:8-9

Wisdom compels us to use our voices and influence to advocate for those who lack the power to speak for themselves. This biblical mandate challenges us to move beyond personal comfort and safety to actively work for justice and equity in our communities and society.

Advocacy takes many forms, from writing letters to elected officials about policies affecting the poor to volunteering with organizations that serve marginalized populations. It might involve speaking up when we witness discrimination or using our professional skills to serve those who cannot afford them.

Wise advocacy recognizes the difference between charity and justice. While charitable acts address immediate symptoms of problems, advocacy works to change the systems that create those problems in the first place. Both are necessary, but advocacy often requires more sustained effort and courage to challenge powerful interests.

This calling is especially relevant for those who have privilege, education, or influence that others lack. When we use these advantages to amplify the voices of the marginalized rather than just advancing our own interests, we participate in God’s work of justice and mercy.

Effective advocacy also requires listening to those we seek to help, ensuring that our efforts truly serve their needs rather than our own assumptions about what they need.

Prayer:

God, give us courage to speak for those who cannot speak for themselves. Help us use our voices and influence to defend the rights of the poor and needy. Make us effective advocates for justice. Amen.
