Servant Leadership

August 12, 20261 min read

“But it is not so among you; but whoever wishes to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wishes to be first among you must be slave of all.” - Mark 10:43-44

Jesus completely redefined leadership by making service the foundation of greatness. This counterintuitive approach challenges every worldly notion of power and authority, calling us to lead through humility, sacrifice, and genuine care for others’ wellbeing.

Servant leadership recognizes that true authority comes not from position or power but from trust and respect earned through consistent service to others. This style of leadership empowers others to reach their potential, creates environments where people can thrive, and builds sustainable organizations that benefit everyone involved.

Whether we lead in formal positions or informal influence, we all have opportunities to practice servant leadership. Parents can lead their children through patient guidance rather than authoritarian control. Community members can lead through volunteering and advocacy rather than demanding others take action. Students can lead through encouragement and inclusion rather than competition and exclusion.

Wisdom in leadership also means recognizing our own limitations and surrounding ourselves with people who complement our weaknesses. It means making decisions based on what’s best for those we serve, not what enhances our own reputation or comfort.

Prayer:

Jesus, teach us to lead as You led, through service and sacrifice. Help us use any authority we have to empower others and create environments where everyone can flourish. Amen.
