Planting Seeds For The Future

August 30, 20261 min read

“Even when I am old and gray, do not forsake me, my God, till I declare your power to the next generation, your mighty acts to all who are to come.” - Psalm 71:18

As we near the end of our month focused on wisdom, we’re reminded that true wisdom always thinks generationally. The choices we make today, the values we embrace, and the legacy we create will impact not just our own lives but the lives of those who come after us.

The psalmist’s prayer reflects an understanding that wisdom gained through experience carries responsibility. We’re called to pass on what we’ve learned to younger generations, not just through formal teaching but through the example of our lives and the stories we tell about God’s faithfulness.

Generational thinking also applies to the social justice work we’ve discussed throughout this month. When we advocate for better schools, fight against poverty, or work for racial reconciliation, we’re not just addressing immediate needs but creating a better world for our children and grandchildren.

Wisdom recognizes that some of the most important investments we make will not pay dividends in our own lifetime. Planting trees whose shade we may never enjoy, supporting causes whose victories we may not see, and teaching principles whose full impact may not be realized for decades requires faith and long-term vision.

This perspective helps us make decisions based on eternal values rather than immediate gratification, leaving legacies that honor God and bless future generations.

Prayer:

God, help us live with generational vision, making choices today that will bless those who come after us. Use our lives to declare Your power and faithfulness to future generations. Amen.
