Finding Strength In Struggle
“Count it all joy, my brothers and sisters, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces endurance.” - James 1:2-3
One of the most challenging aspects of wisdom is learning to see difficult circumstances through God’s perspective. James doesn’t suggest we pretend to be happy about suffering, but he encourages us to find joy in knowing that God can use our trials to develop character and deepen our faith.
Wisdom teaches us that our trials are not meaningless suffering but opportunities for growth and service. This doesn’t minimize the real pain and difficulty of challenging circumstances, but it offers hope that God can bring good from even the worst situations.
The testing of our faith produces endurance, which is essential for long-term faithfulness. Like a muscle that grows stronger under resistance, our spiritual character develops through facing and overcoming difficulties with God’s help. This endurance enables us to support others who face similar challenges and to remain faithful when circumstances are difficult.
This perspective requires a fundamental shift in how we view problems. Instead of asking “Why me?” we can ask “How can God use this?” Instead of focusing solely on escape, we can look for opportunities to grow and serve. This doesn’t mean we don’t seek solutions or relief, but we approach difficulties with faith rather than despair.
Prayer:
Lord, help us find joy even in trials, knowing that You are working to strengthen our faith. Give us endurance and help us see how our struggles can become sources of hope for others. Amen.
