Building On Solid Ground

“Everyone then who hears these words of mine and acts on them will be like a wise man who built his house on rock.” - Matthew 7:24

Jesus concludes the Sermon on the Mount with this powerful parable about the importance of building our lives on the solid foundation of His teachings. Wisdom recognizes that character, like a building, requires a strong foundation to withstand the storms of life.

The difference between the wise and foolish builders wasn’t their knowledge of Jesus’ teachings but their response to them. Both heard the same words, but only one chose to act on what he learned. This action-based wisdom creates the stability and strength needed to endure life’s inevitable challenges.

Building character on Christ’s teachings means more than intellectual agreement with biblical principles. It requires daily decisions to forgive when we’d rather hold grudges, to serve when we’d rather be served, to tell the truth when lies would be easier, and to love when we’d rather withdraw. These choices, repeated over time, create the solid foundation Jesus describes.

This foundation becomes especially important during times of testing. When financial pressures mount, relationships face strain, or health challenges arise, our character is revealed. Those who have built on the rock of Christ’s teachings find stability and peace even in difficult circumstances, while those who have built on shifting cultural values or personal preferences find themselves overwhelmed by life’s storms.

The process of building character takes time and intentionality. Like constructing a building, it requires careful planning, consistent effort, and regular inspection to ensure we’re staying true to the blueprint Jesus provided. But the result is a life that can weather any storm and provide shelter for others in need.
